Museums & Visitor Centres
Gairloch Heritage Museum
Recently relocated into new premises – a converted Cold War nuclear bunker – the award-winning Gairloch Heritage Museum features local archaeology, history, natural history and culture, and it has a great bookshop focused on the same topics – a must-visit.
Russian Arctic Convoy Museum
Another must-visit, the Russian Arctic Convoy Museum is situated just off the main road in Aultbea on Loch Ewe. It is jam-packed full of memorabilia and archive material, and when combined with a visit to the old WWII gun-emplacements that line Loch Ewe, makes a fascinating day out.
Beinn Eighe & Loch Maree Islands National Nature Reserve
Boasting some of Scotland’s finest mountain, pinewood and loch-side scenery, the Beinn Eighe & Loch Maree Islands National Nature Reserve was the UK’s first, and it remains one of the finest. White quartz-topped Beinn Eighe is flanked at its eastern end by ancient native woodland, while the Loch Maree Islands are covered in Scots pines, all apart from mystical Isle Maree, that is, with its deciduous trees, ancient burial ground and wishing tree.
