What to do on your holiday

There is something for all the family in the Badachro area, from water-sports, fishing and golf, to rambling and serious hill walking. For the more leisurely and for families with children, there are many beautiful secluded sandy beaches, including Red Point, below. Even in the height of summer, these are never crowded. Nature lovers may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of pine martens, deer and peregrine falcons, while Inverewe Gardens provide a sub-tropical oasis in the west highland scenery.

BEACHES
The local beaches are simply stunning - great expanses of sand, with enough dunes and rock pools to keep the children busy for hours. There are three within ten minutes drive of Badachro, and several more on the Gairloch side of the loch.

WALKING AND CLIMBING
The opportunities to walk and climb in the area are practically limitless. As well as the great Torridon hills, popular with munro baggers, there are any number of less challenging walks and climbs within easy reach, including the coastal paths with their breathtaking views to Skye and the Outer Isles.

FISHING
Sea fishing for haddock, whiting and mackerel is popular, and there are several outfits operating boat trips both in Badachro and Gairloch. For those with their own craft, Badachro offers an excellent sheltered anchorage. There is also plenty of scope for the fly fisherman in the many freshwater lochs round about.

GOLF
Golfers will enjoy the sporting 9 hole golf links at Gairloch where one can buy a day, weekly, or monthly ticket.

HORSE RIDING
Horse trekking is available from the stables at Flowerdale.

RAINY DAY ACTIVITIES On wet days, if a bracing walk doesn't appeal, then perhaps a visit to the acclaimed Gairloch Heritage Museum is in order. This lovely museum gives a flavour of life in the area in years gone by, and has plenty to interest young visitors as well as adults. There is also a medium-sized indoor swimming pool at Poolewe, some five miles past Gairloch.

WHERE TO EAT
There is the excellent Badachro Inn - voted the pub with the best views in the UK by the Observer - which serves very good food, as well as having a connoisseur's selection of malt whiskies and a wonderful atmosphere. A more recent addition is Raptures restaurant in Badachro, which provides delicious food in an intimate dining room. Seating is limited, so booking is essential. Across the water in Gairloch and Strath, there are several further restaurants, including two chippies, selling fresh, locally caught fish.

SHOPPING
Strath, some 6 miles away, has good shops, including two licensed grocers, an excellent butcher/fishmonger, attractive gift shops, a hairdressers and the post office. In fact everything you are likely to want on holiday can be found. There is a branch of The Bank of Scotland (with 24hr autoteller) in Gairloch. However, on Sundays the only shop open is the Chemistore on Gairloch Pier. It sells groceries, bread, milk and papers.
